The first half of 2024 has brought to light alarming data about cybersecurity in government. According to the Centre for the Prevention, Treatment and Response to Government Cyber Incidents (CTIR-Gov), the period registered the highest number of incidents in federal government systems since 2020.
From January to July 2024, 4,700 cyber incidents were reported, a worrying increase that doubled the record from the previous year. Among the most common criminal activities, the center highlighted intrusions, the creation of fake pages, malicious emails and data leaks.
CTIR-Gov also noted a significant increase in incidents and vulnerabilities related to data leaks, with a total of 3,200 reports in the first half of 2024 alone. This figure includes not only confirmed cases, but also fraud attempts and failures in government computer systems that threaten the integrity of public data and the credibility of organizations.
The data published by CTIR-Gov shows the fluctuations faced by public bodies: in 2020, 7,200 cyber incidents were recorded, a figure that fell to 3,400 in 2022, but rose again in 2023 to reach 4,900 malicious activities.
